The Consulate of Italy presents a moving series of photos by young Italian artist Valentina Vannicola inspired by the classic literary work of the Italian poet of the Middle Ages Dante Alighieri. The Inferno is the first part of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Set in 1300 it is an allegory telling the story of Dante’s journey through hell with the poet Virgil as a guide.
The images are made with the participation of local people from Valentina’s home town of Tolfa in the north of Rome. Using real people, rather than “performers”, and real places gives the work an extra veracity. Common people bring to the scenes their personal experience of reality, which encompasses both darkness and light as well as irony and humour.
Each image represents one of the nine stages of "Inferno" (Hell) that Dante’s epic poem so dramatically imagines. At its heart is the recognition and rejection of sin as a soul journies toward God.
Many artists have been inspired to illustrate Dante’s texts through history. Vannicola says: “Imagination is a “circuit breaker”. It is the chance we are given to postulate another world, one not necessarily better but different, far from our being here, now, and in this moment. This allows a detachment from ourselves, offering us the opportunity to postulate the “how it could be” or the “how it could have been”. Imagination distances us and often, at the end of its journeys, offers us a more objective view of ourselves.”
Vannicola’s images tell an ever bigger story that Dante’s classic. She brings the struggle to lead a good life, and the consequences of failing to do so, into the contemporary world, elevating the story beyond religious faith and making it relevant to the 21st century.
